The cameras were rolling on 1-24-70 for legendary senior Dan Gable's expected 26th straight win by fall, which was already an NCAA record. Gable had never lost in h.s. or college. But as the bout wore on before ending 23-3, Gable blurted out in exasperation at mat edge's edge: "If I can't pin you, no one can."
Dan, as usual, was right, as Lehigh soph Herb Campbell--in just his 6th varsity bout--was indeed never pinned in an indefatigable career which led to his selection as team captain in '72. He became a demon in duals with a career dual mark of 24-5-3. Two of the losses were to NCAA champs and a third came in a 5-4 dogged battle in Grace with 3x EIWA champion (twice OW and an NCAA 3rd for Penn St), Clyde Frantz.
Campbell finished 39-14-3 (.723), earning a 3rd and 5th place at Easterns in '71 and '72, at 150 pounds.
