1971 Wrestling Season > Greg Surenian

Greg Surenian

Bio: A talented 2-time NJ state champion, Greg's one full season with Lehigh was a stunning one. Although just 3-2-1 in duals as he felt his way through the varsity ranks, he failed to place at the EIWA tournament.

This ordinarily would have left him home for NCAAs--however in the only district qualifier experiment ever tried (in Princeton for East wrestlers), he placed 2nd to Navy's EIWA champion, Lew Mason and qualified for Nationals.

Although that left him 0-2-1 vs. the Mid, Surenian soared through NCAAs, losing only to the Outstanding Wrestler, Fujita of Oklahoma State in the semifinals. Greg finished 3rd, while Mason did not place for Navy.

Losing interest in college, Surenian headed for New England to build a new life for himself after athletics. Among his contributions: a longstanding friendship with team manager Arnie Bramow, looking out for him during his struggles in physical rehabilitation center.
