1994 Softball Season > Meredith Wall Fitz

Meredith Wall Fitz is in the Lehigh Hall of Fame

Bio: Often credited with building the Lehigh soft-ball program from the ground up, Meri Wall came to Lehigh locally from Whitehall High School and quickly became one of the greatest pitchers ever to wear the Brown & White.

"Meri is one of the most competitive athletes to ever come through the Lehigh softball program," said then-head coach Sue Troyan, who is now the head coach of Lehigh's women's basketball team.

"Her competitive spirit and drive enabled her to achieve the level of success that she did. At 5'5", 115 Ibs., Meri was hardly an imposing force on the mound, but you couldn't measure the size of her heart."

Wall made an immediate impact in the pitchers' circle and helped the softball team build its winning tradition. As a freshman, she picked up eight wins and pitched all four games of the Patriot League tournament, helping the team to a third place finish.

A fiery competitor, she picked up ten wins as a sophomore and lowered her earned run average by two-tenths of a run in a single season.

Wall's junior season was an even bigger improvement over her already-solid first two seasons. A team captain, she posted a 13-5 record and boasted a miniscule 2.01 ERA in leading Lehigh to its first-ever Patriot League title. Wall was named the league tournament's co-MVP.

She saved her best pitching performance, however, for her senior season. In 1994, Wall won 15 games, with a microscopic 1.99 ERA. She was hon-ored by the Patriot League as its Most Valuable

Player that season, as well as being named the league's Pitcher of the Year. Wall was once again named the league tournament's most valuable player, as Lehigh captured its second straight league title. For her efforts, Wall was also recognized as Lehigh's most outstanding female athlete in 1994.

Wall was consistently among the best, and was named the team's MVP in all four seasons. She established new Lehigh records for strikeouts in a season with 137, and for innings pitched in a single campaign (162.2). Wall was recognized for her excellent play in 1994 by both the SouthSide Boost-ers and the Lehigh Valley Association of Intercolle-giate Athletics for Women.

"I am very surprised by this honor," Meri said. "To be honest, this speaks volumes towards Sue and Fran [Troyan] and the team I played with. It's a nice honor to be recognized when you play a team sport. My teammates were great."

Three years after graduating from Lehigh, Wall married Andy Fitz '95, who wrestled for the Engi-neers. She currently works as an assistant vice pres-ident and relationship manager for PNC Business Credit, a part of the PNC Financial Services Group. While at Lehigh, Wall was a participant in Lehigh's C.O.A.C.H. program, and she remains an active part of the community. In addition to working with com-munity food drives and the local United Way, she also participates in softball clinics for area youth.

Meri and Andy Fitz reside in Asbury, New Jersey with their daughters Amanda (3) and Rachel (1).
